are you highly sensitive?

'Why can't I endure it when everyone else can'?

Being sensory-sensitive or highly sensitive means being born with a heightened sensory system. It is not a diagnosis, hysteria, oversensitivity, or weakness.

It's just the way you are.

Having a heightened sensory system can be a significant challenge in the world we live in. You are typically more prone to stress and anxiety due to the amount of sensory input and the lack of filtering that others have.

On top of that, many sensitive individuals tend to confuse their sensitivity with low self-esteem and end up being hard on themselves. They may have thoughts like, "You should be able to handle this," "Pull yourself together," "It's nonsense," "It's just two hours, you can do it," and so on.

During the first 5 years of my clinic's existence, not a single word was mentioned about being sensory-sensitive on my website. Yet, more than 80% of the people who have found their way to me are born with a heightened sensory system. Many of them without even realizing it.

It is important to emphasize that:

  • Being highly sensitive is hereditary

  • 15-20% of the population is born this way

  • This applies to both men and women

don't you know if you are highly sensitive?

There are many characteristics - and, of course, varying degrees - of sensitivity

Do you experience any of the following as problematic?

  • Does being around many people for an extended period, even if you enjoy their company, affect you?

  • Do loud noises, cold temperatures, hunger, or tiredness impact your ability to cope with what you're doing?

  • Do conflicts - or just a negative atmosphere - between others affect you, even if it has nothing to do with you?

  • Do violent, scary, or psychologically unsettling films affect you more than others

  • Do you quickly feel overwhelmed in your daily life and don't know how to handle it - and sometimes end up adding more activities to try to help yourself, but it has the opposite effect?

  • Do you often experience guilt, racing thoughts, and find yourself criticizing yourself for it?

Do you experience any of the following positive aspects in your daily life?

  • Feeling deeply happy and uplifted when seeing a beautiful landscape and being in nature.
  • Finding peace and joy in the company of animals, sometimes even trying to hide it because others may not understand your connection.
  • Music you love having a profound impact on your mood, lifting your spirits, or even triggering strong emotional responses.
  • Being moved emotionally by others' happiness, romantic scenes, or heartwarming commercials, to the point where it brings tears to your eyes.

If you relate to many of the above experiences, come and learn more and gain tools to embrace being a highly sensitive person in a society that might not always be attuned to your sensitivity.

Put on your own oxygen mask first

The combination of "The good, big heart" and "The fix-it gene" often leads many highly sensitive individuals to struggle in their daily lives, especially when it comes to relationships.

I observe common traits among highly sensitive individuals. They often work with people and/or act as caregivers in their family and network. It becomes draining when many people try to feed off their positive energy.

As a highly sensitive person, you are strongly wired to give. However, many in your situation are not attentive enough to put on their own oxygen mask first, even though they know they should.

Putting on the mask is challenging:

To do so, you need to sometimes say no to others. This goes against your instincts to help and be there for others. Therefore, saying no and setting boundaries may feel difficult-wrong-forbidden-impossible.

But without oxygen, you cannot continue to be there for others.

You learn about the oxygen mask from me. The oxygen mask prevents stress, provides relief, healing, and inner balance, so you don't strain yourself too much in life and your relationships.

what do you gain from a process with me?

We map out where the gifts in your sensory system lie and where the challenges arise. There are plenty of gifts within it - some of us even thrive by being able to quickly 'tune in' to others - the gifts are just not always neatly wrapped. They may appear a bit frayed around the edges.

With the combination of new approaches in cognitive therapy, along with mindfulness and my other tools, you will go through personal development, mentalization, and more, creating the filter that allows you to navigate your life as a highly sensitive person, even in the long run

"Dear Mette,

I just want to wish you a very Merry Christmas. It dawned on me yesterday that it's already been 6 months since I last visited you... So much has happened, and things are going well - with ups and downs, but I'm using all the tools you taught me. You are my lifeline, and it's comforting to have you in my corner."
